PRESIDENT'S UPDATE    VOL. 1, #4
November 19, 2008

The 2008 U.S. National Show was an outstanding success for NAPHA from many aspects.  There was an atmosphere of fun and excitement that I haven’t witnessed for some years.  The show was also a financial success.  NAPHA made a net profit of $74,289.47.  For a breakdown on show income and expenses, click here.  Our staff, Donna, Carolyn and Felice, are to be commended for an outstanding job.  They produced the entire National Show with little help from anyone.  We are very fortunate to have people who have the talent and are willing to put in the hours it takes to put on a show of the caliber of the 2008 Nationals.  The staff has already started work on the 2009 National Show.  Our Performance judge for 2009 will be Rick Mero and the Breeding judge will be Roque Benavides.  Both judges were selected from the recommendations provided by the Regional Advisory Council.

Although the show was a financial success, NAPHA has had to make some cuts in staff to cover the expenses.  It has been mentioned in prior UPDATE’S that this year’s legal expenses and the moratorium on fines and penalties impacted NAPHA’S budget and cash flow.  The Board, at its most recent meeting, approved eliminating the position of Communications Director as a means to reduce expenses.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Carolyn Wills for all the outstanding work she has done for NAPHA.  She has established a brand for our breed and gained recognition for us in the equine industry with her award winning newsletters.

Also, at the most recent Board meeting, we agreed to submit to the membership quarterly financial reports.  These reports are not audited and come directly from QuickBooks.  We hope that these reports will keep you apprised of how we are doing throughout the year.  Click on the following to see the NAPHA quarterly reports for the period ending September 30, 2008.

BATTLE OF THE BREEDS

NAPHA was well represented at the Battle of the Breeds in Santa Barbara, CA this past weekend (11/14-16).  Riders from twelve breeds competed in an extremely difficult trail competition.  Each participating association was allowed to nominate one adult rider and one junior rider.  Tony Botello riding DR El Jefe from D Ranch was the adult rider and Mack Mazzi was our Junior rider. Tony and El Jefe took third place and Mack had an excellent ride, placing fourth.  The Battle of the Breeds was sponsored by Trail Blazer Magazine.

Lynn Kinsky of Ranchito de Libertad; Lionell Griffith of Windy Hills Ranch; Terry Jarchow, Enrique Sabauste, Vicente Andalon, and Helen Brown of Rancho de la Florecita; Dante Mazzi, Mackenzie Mazzi, and Larry Redman of Rancho Chahuchu;  Maidy Dreyfuss and Tony Botello of D Ranch, gave a long four days of their time to represent the Peruvian Horse to the public that weekend.  They were all involved in putting together and manning the booth through the whole show, as well as riding in the demonstration arena and functioning as good will ambassadors for the breed. Terry reported that, "The Peruvians equated themselves very well! We created quite a bit of interest with the demo we did on each day."

Lionell Griffith was kind enough to send us some photos.  To get a good look at how difficult the course was, click here.

MEMBER SURVEY

In 2005, NAPHA conducted a survey of the membership to get direct member feedback and establish a benchmark for NAPHA.  You will receive a new survey in January and it will contain the same questions from 2005 to see how we are doing.  The survey will also contain new questions and requests for information that will better allow us to serve our members and our breed better.

Please take the time to fill out the survey and return it to us.  It will help us know what you expect of your breed association.

I want to take this opportunity to wish you and yours a wonderful Thanksgiving!!
