PRESIDENT'S UPDATE
VOL. 1, #3 - October 25, 2008

I have to tell you, I am excited about our present situation at NAPHA as a result of two important events. The first is our National Show and the second is the soon to close moratorium on late fees. Why would I be excited about these events? Please read on.

4th U.S. National Show a Tremendous Success

To those of you, who participated in the 4th Annual U.S. National Show, thank you! Your presence and your support helped make this show one of the most memorable so far. I want to congratulate our staff for an outstanding job. We had 222 horses this year which is very close to the number of horses last year. We were not only amazed that we had so much participation, but our entries exceeded our expectations from the prior year. We are still entering all the financial information so I do not as yet have the final figures. We hope to have that show tally completed by end of the week. Besides the show there was so much activity. The Friday, Monte Carlo Night was great fun. We had a nice meal, a good climate for conversation and yet in the same room you could gamble with a small group of friends and have some fun. Felice Bearer was in charge of the evening and transformed the Round-Up Inn into a beautiful dining and gaming experience. The ambience created by Felice was incredible. Dressed in a tuxedo, piano player Richard Gwodz provided the music that made the mood complete. The food and service was provided by Outback Restaurant and at every table it appeared that folks were having a good evening. The Saturday night Merial Reining Classic Competition was also orchestrated by Felice. Sponsored by Merial, LTD, the competition featured eleven of our breed’s top riders. With purses being paid to 6th place the following winners took home checks: 1st Place - Julio Sifuentes - $3,000 2nd Place – David Averette $2,000 3rd Place – Lynn Omohundro - $1,000 4th Place –Cheryl Aldrich - $500
5th Place - Emily Weaver - $300 6th Place – Roberto Quijandria - $200

Start practicing for next year, as the successful event will become a permanent Saturday Night production.

Dick Sisson of Scissortail Ranch in Ft. Worth, TX, won the $10,000 John Deere Gator raffled this year.

There was a lot of excitement and enthusiasm at the show as we have tried to build upon the success of the past. We have more fun and excitement already lined up for 2009. I hope that you can join us then. Those dates are October 8-11, 2009, John Justin Arena, Ft. Worth, Texas. Plan to attend the social functions. I believe you will like what staff is planning.

Webcast Added to Long
List of "Firsts" for NAPHA

Perhaps the most exciting thing about the 2008 National Show was our ability to share the excitement with those at home, via webcasting. The webcast was the brainchild of Donna Bearer and she deserves our thanks. This idea was her vision and she did not come to the Board with this idea because putting it together took some serious work and she wasn’t sure she could accomplish it. The webcast wasn’t finalized until around midnight Wednesday night, with the show starting the next morning. Donna started working on the project about a month before the show, arranging for T1 Lines, a server that could accommodate the bandwidth needed to meet the demands of the live broadcast and arrangements with the shows videographer, Mustang Videos. Donna was not sure it would work and did not want to raise our expectations. What a wonderful way to reach out to the world with our horses. Donna did speak with a few members about the idea of sponsoring and so there were ranches listed as sponsors. These ranches will be the beginning of the list of sponsors for 2009 and others who wish to become involved this way can contact Donna. We can use all the help we can get.

With over 44,000 viewers from all over the world, the number of people logging onto the webcast far exceeded our expectations and demand for bandwidth. Next year sponsors will seriously be recognized and thanked for helping us continue this exciting venue for our horses."

We have received emails from all over the world: England, Denmark, Peru, Central America, etc. Linda Virgin told us that Julio Sifuentes’ parents were able to watch him ride for the first time. Friends and relatives gathered to watch as Julio won the Merial Reining Classic.

The stats from the company hosting the webcast showed 44,405 hits. The maximum number of people watching at once was 92 on Saturday night and 101 during the championships. The average viewing time per hit was 27 min. 47 sec.

Moratorium on Late Fees &

Penalties Ends Oct. 31, 2008

I wanted to remind members that the Moratorium on Late Fees and Penalties Ends October 31. Registration work must be mailed into the NAPHA office with all paperwork completed and the required signatures, photo requirements met; registration and DNA typing fees paid. Your paperwork should be mailed via Priority Mail with Delivery Confirmation to ensure it arrives at the NAPHA office. If necessary, you will receive one notice from the

Registrar, telling you  what needs to be completed, along with your DNA kit(s). You will have 30 days from the date of that notice to complete all requirements or the normal fines and fees will apply. MAKE CERTAIN YOUR PAPERWORK IS COMPLETE.

The Temporary Suspension of Fines and Fees will only apply to registrations postmarked no later than Oct. 31, 2008. NAPHA will return to the regular fee schedule and cease waiving late fees for any reason on any registration work, owner transfers or other NAPHA forms, postmarked Nov. 1, 2008 or later.

Do not miss this opportunity to take advantage of the moratorium on late fees and penalties. It will not be offered again.

On-Line, Part-Blood Registry
Another first for NAPHA

The NAPHA staff has been working with our software programmers to expand Horse Studbook-on-Line to include our Part-blood registry. NAPHA Registrar Arlynda Castro has been instrumental in the design of the database. The Part-blood Registry is for horses that are offspring of either a registered Peruvian purebred stallion or mare and any horse breed or donkey. Members can access the database by logging on to www.horsestudbook.com.

When you log in, most of you will automatically be in the breed Peruvian. If you go to Common Tasks and click on Change Breed you will see a list of breeds. There are three that start with Peruvian: Peruvian, Peruvian Mule and Peruvian Partbred. With the success of Cadillac’s presentation at the recent U.S. Nationals; and the fact that there are many Peruvian Mules out there, Arlynda gave them their own registry. Many people may only be interested in a Peruvian Mule and not another cross. The other breeds listed, are crosses that have been done with Peruvians over the years. The non-Peruvian part will be listed by their breed, registered name and reg #. On the Certificate it will say what breed the sire or dam is.

Change the Breed type to Peruvian Partbred and click on Horses. You will see a list of horses that have had their photos added. Click on the small box to the left of the picture, of the first horse (should be a palomino). This takes you to the detail view page of this horse. Information on this page includes:

Sire Breed – in this case the sire is a Peruvian

Sire Purity – not listed as the sire is a registered Peruvian Horse

Dam Breed – the dam is a Paso Fino mare

Dam – next to her name is her PFHA registration #. If someone wants more information on that side of this horse’s pedigree, they can contact the PFHA.

Dam Purity – if the dam was a Part Peruvian it would show that she was 1/2, 3/4, etc. Peruvian Paso Purity – you will see1/2 here – this horse is 1/2 Peruvian Horse (and 1/2 Paso Fino)

We have 1,110 horses registered in the Partblood Registry. We will be working to increase the registrations in this registry, as many part-bloods exist.

Arlynda pointed out that several major breed associations have added part-blood registries. "The Arabian Association has a very large registry of part-bloods and have grown their registry and shows by including the part-bloods," noted Donna.

We feel the part-blood registry will give us even more opportunity to reach out to those in the equine world who value the smooth ride of our breed. Many purebred owners were originally part-blood owners. If there is enough interest, we will consider a few part-blood classes for the 2009 National Show. If you would like to show your part-blood, email Donna Bearer: donna@napha.net.

IN CONCLUSION

So why would I be excited about these two events? We had a successful show and it was profitable. We did sell a lot of raffle tickets and the gator was donated to begin with and so we made some revenue there. Also in one of my prior "UPDATES" it was discussed that I believed that our cash flow was also impacted by the moratorium on late fees. It appeared that many of our members were waiting until the deadline to send in last years foal crop registrations and also to respond to the opportunity to register horses not yet in the data base and over two years of age. This has happened. Arlynda is receiving stacks of registration papers daily and it appears as though our assumption was correct.

Both of these events have impacted our cash flow in a positive way and that leads me to feel excited about NAPHA.
