MEET OUR 2009 NATIONAL SHOW JUDGES
Roque Benavides & Rick Mero

ROQUE BENAVIDES - OUR BREEDING JUDGE

Roque Benavides is the Past President of the Peruvian Horse association in Peru A.N.C.P.C.P.P.  He has judged the national show in Peru many times and is considered one of the most knowledgeable judges of the Peruvian Horse today.  This is the second time Sr. Benavides has been invited to judge the NAPHA U.S. National Show.

An excellent rider, Peruvian Horses have been his passion for many years.

Sr. Benavides followed his father Alberto into the family business and has run Buenaventura, Peru's largest mining company, since 2001. From 1985 to 2001, he was the company's CFO. He has served as president of the Peruvian Chamber of Commerce.  As at home in the U.S. as in Peru, he received a B.S. in Engineering from Pontificia Universidad Catolica del Peru (Pontifical Catholic University of Peru) in Lima, Peru in 1977 and an M.B.A. from Henley, The Management College of Brunnel University in 1980, completed the Program for Management Development at the Harvard Business School in 1985 and the Advanced Management Program at Templeton College of Oxford University in 1997.

RICK MERO - OUR PERFORMANCE JUDGE

After an Odyssey around the United States, Rick has emerged with a set of credentials as a Peruvian Horse show judge, a solid reputation as a trainer and breeder, and an impressive list of winnings. With an ebullient sense of humor and a passion for Peruvian Horses, Rick is considered one of the top U.S. judges of Peruvian Horses.  He has trained and ridden several stallions to the prestigious " Champion of Champions Breeding Stallion" title.  Rick was introduced to the Peruvian Horse in 1968.

His father, Dick Mero, and Uncle Kenneth W. Mero are successful trainers and farriers. Dick Mero is still training horses in Oregon at age 78! It can be seen why Rick's success with horses comes so naturally, it's genetic!
Rick has judged almost every show in the United States.  When presented with two outstanding horses in the arena, Rick always rides them both before making his final decision.  An outstanding horseman, he is famous for coining the phrase, "My butt don't lie".
